Why this site exists

The same handful of marquee rooms with publicists get covered to exhaustion, while the neighborhood spots locals drive across town for on a Tuesday night stay buried under sponsored listings on the platforms most people search.

Most Austin coverage circles the same handful of names: whatever opened last month, whatever SXSW crowd is in town, whatever made a national list. That's not how this city actually eats. Austin's real dining life runs through Burnet Road pho counters, South Congress trailers, Round Rock donut runs, and East Side taquerias that were here before the East Side got expensive. Top of Austin exists to track that full record, not just the loudest openings, and to be honest about a city where a icon can close and a trailer can outlast a brick-and-mortar. We build our rankings from the public review record, not from press invites or ad relationships.

Two rules we don't break

Local consensus, not marketing noise.

Every ranking runs through our Insider Score: Bayesian-weighted ratings, so a 4.9 from 50 reviews doesn't outrank a 4.6 from 2,000, plus a bonus for depth of record and for rooms our writers have reviewed in full. The list reflects what regulars would tell you, not what is trending with weekend visitors.

The city changes, the list does too.

New rooms open across the metro, neighborhood spots earn into the consensus, longtime favorites slip when the kitchen changes. Rankings rebuild weekly, so the list keeps up with the city instead of freezing in place.

What we cover

We cover the whole spread: Central Texas barbecue joints smoking brisket on post oak, Tex-Mex combo plates and queso alongside the distinct tradition of interior Mexican cooking, the breakfast tacos that structure the city's mornings, and the trailer-to-brick-and-mortar path that built local names like Torchy's and Via 313 in the first place. That means East Austin's interior-Mexican wave and its long-standing taquerias, South Lamar's new-American cluster, the immigrant-food corridors along North Lamar and Burnet, and the Hill Country and BBQ-trail towns just outside city limits, tracked separately, not folded into Austin proper. We track 98+ restaurants across the metro against the same methodology; the full method is laid out at How We Work.

Top of Austin is published by Top Rated Network LLC, an independent, veteran-owned Las Vegas media company that runs city dining guides on the same methodology across the country. The rankings and the writing are produced by this site’s own desk.

The site is small by design. No investors, no growth pressure, no quarterly board meeting that needs engagement numbers to keep climbing. The rankings answer to the data; the data answers to the city.

The methodology (Bayesian-weighted ratings, weekly recalculation) is the same one Top Rated Network uses across its other city guides. The editorial voice is local to Austin. The sites themselves are built and maintained by WebIgniter, our in-house web studio.
