Veterans Day in Austin: the parade is on the 7th, the free meals, and where to eat

The Austin Veterans Parade is on Saturday, November 7, 2026, not on Veterans Day. It steps off at nine in the morning from the Congress Avenue Bridge and runs north to the Texas Capitol, with a ceremony on the South Steps at eleven. Veterans Day itself is Wednesday, November 11, and that is when the restaurant offers run. Here is what is confirmed, what counts as proof of service, and where to eat.

Austin’s parade is not on Veterans Day, and the city’s own website will tell you otherwise if you are not careful. The Austin Veterans Parade steps off at nine in the morning on Saturday, November 7, 2026, from the Congress Avenue Bridge, and runs north up Congress to the Texas Capitol. The organisers have that on the front page of their own site. Veterans Day itself is Wednesday, November 11, four days later, and that is the day the restaurant offers run. The meals are the least settled part of any of this: every list you will find today is last year’s list. We checked.

The parade, and the date most listings get wrong

The Military Veterans Empowerment Network organises the Austin Veterans Parade, and it has 2026 posted plainly: Saturday, November 7, from the Congress Avenue Bridge to the Texas Capitol. Step-off is 9 a.m. The theme this year is veterans helping veterans and their families. Gates open at seven, it is free to watch from anywhere along Congress, and parking downtown is paid.

The morning runs to a schedule after that. At ten there is a Veterans Resource Event on the South Steps of the Capitol, where Central Texas organisations set up to talk to veterans, service members and families about services and programmes. At eleven the official Veterans Ceremony starts on the same steps. The whole thing is done around midday.

Now the part to watch. The City of Austin’s own news pages still carry a headline about the 69th annual parade being on November 11, which was true of a previous year and is not true of this one. Several event listings also print an 11.11 a.m. ceremony. The organisers say eleven o’clock flat. If you take your date from the city site or an aggregator rather than from the parade’s own site, you will turn up on the wrong day entirely.

Free meals: what is actually confirmed for 2026

Same problem, different subject. Search for Veterans Day free meals right now and you will find long lists with 2026 in the headline. Open the restaurants’ own pages and the offers are from 2025. Applebee’s Veterans Day page, as this was written in mid-September, still says the free entree is available on Tuesday, November 11, which was last year’s date.

So we are not going to publish a list of offers that no restaurant has agreed to. What we can tell you is the pattern, because it is remarkably stable. The chains that run a free Veterans Day meal have run it for years, most announce in the last week of October, and the terms rarely move: dine-in only, one meal per veteran, a limited menu to choose from, drinks and tip not included, and participating locations only, which matters if you are coming in from Round Rock or Cedar Park. Applebee’s has run its offer for eighteen consecutive years. Golden Corral, Texas Roadhouse, Chili’s, Denny’s, Red Robin, Cracker Barrel, Bob Evans and Buffalo Wild Wings have all been regular participants.

The Austin-specific trap is the gap between the two dates. The parade is Saturday the 7th; the free meals are Wednesday the 11th. If you march up Congress Avenue and go looking for a free lunch afterwards, you are four days early.

We are checking the chains’ own pages weekly and will list each 2026 offer here as the restaurant confirms it, with the date we confirmed it. Nothing goes on this page from an aggregator.

What counts as proof of service

This is the question that actually causes trouble at the door, and the answer is broader than most people expect. Applebee’s published terms accept a Uniformed Services ID card, a Uniformed Services retired ID card, a current Leave and Earnings Statement, a veterans organization card such as American Legion or VFW, a DD214, a citation or commendation, and, simply, a photograph of yourself in uniform. Most chains use a similar list. If you served and you do not carry a card, a DD214 or a photo is usually enough. Call the specific location first, because the offer is franchise-level and the person answering the phone is the one who will be working the door.

Gifts for the veteran in your family

The veteran in your house is reading the top half of this page. If you are the one buying for him or her, this is the half that matters. These are the things that actually get worn and kept: the branch cap, the case for the flag that came off the casket, the box the medals finally come out of the drawer for. Twelve picks, all five branches, every one of them rated by people who bought it.

Where to eat on parade morning

A nine o’clock step-off makes this a breakfast problem before it is a lunch problem, and Austin is the right city to have that problem in. These are ranked by Insider Score and all four are open on a Saturday. If you want something within sight of the start line, Veracruz All Natural on East Cesar Chavez opens at seven and scores 7.4. Red Ash downtown scores 8.8 and is dinner only.
